Gun Dog Program
Started Dog Program
Duration: 5 months
Basic Retriever Training:
*Every dog is individualized and learns at different paces. We start accepting dogs into retriever training at 5-6 months of age.
First Month:
*During the first month of training your dog will go through basic obedience training and learn: heel, sit, stay, here, and place. He/she will be well socialized in new environments as well as loud noises and water.
Second Month:
*Once your dog has mastered the fundamentals of basic obedience he/she will move on to "collar conditioning.'' This is the process in which your dog will learn what the E-collar is. During this time your dog will learn how to walk on and off leash as well as the commands he/she learned in basic obedience once given the verbal command. Collar conditioning is very important in molding your dog into a well mannered and receptive retriever. This is the process in which the foundation for force fetch is created.
Third Month:
The third month of retriever training is where force fetch happens. Force fetch is where the dog correctly learns how to handle pressure. The most common method used is the "ear pinch method." This is the method we use and have been most successful with. During this time your dog will not be retrieving. This step requires the dogs upmost attention with zero distractions. Each dog is very individualized in how they handle pressure and each dog learns force fetch at different paces. Some may take longer than others, but this step is vital for a successful retriever and must be completed before moving on to steadying.
Fourth Month:
Once your dog completes force fetch he/she will be ready to hit the field and start putting all of the fundamentals together. This transition is builds your dogs confidence and helps them understand all the fundamentals they have learned from the beginning. Once your dog has put all of the fundamentals together, they move into the steadying stage in the fifth month.
Fifth Month:
The fifth month is where all of the magic happens and your dog starts to become a polished retriever. Your dog will learn to pick up basic single birds and transition to basic doubles. At the point your dog is consistent with this step he/she will be able to move onto basic handling and start the T-Drill if they are ahead of the training schedule.

**Note: As mentioned above, every dog is individualized and learns at different paces. If your dog is a fast learner more can be achieved within the "basic" time frame. If your dog learns at a slower pace, he/she may require additional time with us so that your dog is proficient and be successful the field.
*Note: if the dog requires additional time, the price is then pro-rated at a daily rate until the dog has completed the program if the time does not exceed another month.

Seasoned & Finished Level Program
Advanced Retriever Training:
After your dog has all of the fundamentals to be successful in the field and has achieved steadiness, he/she will be able to move on to advanced work. This is where your dog will learn how to "handle," meaning they will know hand signals and have more control.
Advanced dogs have two different classifications:
Seasoned level/Senior Level and Finished level/Master Level
Seasoned Level/Senior Level:
A seasoned level dog is considered a dog that is steady to shot, able to pick up doubles, run a blind, be steady to a walk-up, and exhibit control for diversions. A seasoned level dog will exhibit control while being off leash/collar.
Finished Level/Master Level:
A finished level dog requires many months of tedious training to be successful. He/she will need to be proficient at triples, blinds, diversions, and honoring another dog while of leash. A finished level dog will always exhibit control and steadiness at all times.
These terms are commonly used in hunt tests and how to classify a dogs abilities and training level.

**Note: advanced level dogs require many months of training, and as mentioned above is individualized. It is necessary for dogs at this level to be mentally mature and willing to learn.

What are Hunt Tests?
A hunt test is an event at which the natural ability and training of gun dogs are evaluated against a written standard. Each dog that meets this standard earns a pass. This is unlike a field trial in which dog/handler teams compete against one another with only one dog being declared the winner. Hunt tests are organized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), the North American Hunting Retriever Association (NAHRA), the United Kennel Club (UKC) under the auspices of the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC), and the Société Centrale Canine (SCC).
